Vertebrate Palaeoecology of the Pisco Formation (Miocene, Peru): Glimpses into the Ancient Humboldt Current Ecosystem

چکیده

The northward-flowing Humboldt Current hosts perpetually high levels of productivity along the western coast South America. Here, we aim to elucidate deep-time history this globally important ecosystem based on a detailed palaeoecological analysis exceptionally preserved middle–upper Miocene vertebrate assemblages Pisco Formation East Basin, southern Peru. We summarise observations hundreds fossil whales, dolphins, seals, seabirds, turtles, crocodiles, sharks, rays, and bony fishes reconstruct ecological relationships in wake Middle Climatic Optimum, marked cooling that followed it. lowermost, middle sequence (P0) its assemblage testify warm, semi-enclosed, near-shore palaeoenvironment. During first part Tortonian (P1), within prominent upwelling system supported diverse mesopredators, at least some which permanently resided embayment used it as nursery or breeding/calving area. Younger portions (P2) reveal more open setting, with wide-ranging species like rorquals increasingly dominating assemblage, but also local differences reflecting distance from coast. Like today, these ancient precursors modern Ecosystem were sardines, notably differed their present-day equivalent being dominated by extremely large-bodied apex predators Livyatan melvillei Carcharocles megalodon.

with the Regional Oceanic Modeling System (ROMS). The oceanic model simulated the climatological and interannual variation of temperature, salinity and currents (Penven et al. 2005). This model will be used as boundary condition...

Ramphastosula (aves, Sulidae): a New Genus from the Early Pliocene of the Pisco Formation, Peru

Cranial material from a new genus (Ramphastosula) of Sulidae is described. The material comes from the Early–Lower Pliocene of the Pisco Formation of the central-southern coast of Peru. The skulls are characterized by (1) remarkable convex curvature of the dorsal surface and straight ventral surface of the rostrum, only with a curvature on the third anterior part and the tip of the bill; (2) we...

The 2007 Pisco, Peru, earthquake (M8.0): seismology and geodesy

S U M M A R Y We investigate the 2007 Pisco, Peru, earthquake (M8.0) using seismological and geodetic data. Analysis of teleseismic records indicates that the earthquake is characterized by a steadily increasing moment rate, with the maximum occurring between about 55 and 70 s and the associated slip occurring about 40 km south of the epicentre. We combine InSAR data from L-band (ALOS) and C-ba...
